Dick was raised by his Grandparents Herbert (Father) and Eleanor (Tammy) Allkins at 3473 Oxford St., Vancouver B.C. Father built the house before and after WW1. The house is still there. He went to Franklin School and then Templeton . During these years he met his

future wife Irene Penfold. In 1935 he moved to Harrison Hot Springs B.C. There he got his first job on a tug with Paul Raake on the Tipella. He ended his towboat career when he retired from RivTow Straits Ltd. In 1982. In between times on boats he was also a logger. At various times he was A Loader, Hooktender, Donkeypuncher and a BoomMan. He also owned a camp tender boat the Ruth S, delivering supplies up and down Harrison Lake. In 1939 he married Irene Penfold. In the early 50s he was one of the key people who helped build the Harrison Hot Springs Community Hall. From 1958 to 1972 he operated several Richfi eld and ARCO service stations in the Los Angeles area. After retiring in 1982 he signed on as Mate on the United Church vessel the Thomas Crosby V. He served two years as Mate then four years as Captain plying the waters of the B.C. Coast from Victoria to Ketchikan AK. Stopping at every lighthouse, fl oat camp, gyppo logging outfi t, hole in the wall and Reserve. Final retirement in 1988 at the age of 71. Dick lived a full and challenging life. He will be missed and remembered by many relatives and friends from Harrison Hot Springs, Agassiz, Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and Los Angeles area. He was also a member of the Canadian Merchant Service Guild. Richard was a direct descendent of Joseph Northrup who founded the city of Milford Connecticut in 1639.
